Cosmonautics Day in Russia is celebrated annually on April 12. This day commemorates the first human space flight, which was made by Yuri Gagarin in 1961.315
The date was officially approved by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated April 9, 1962. In 1968, at a conference of the International Aviation Federation, April 12 was given international status and became known as "World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day." In 2011, the UN General Assembly proclaimed this date the International Day of Human Spaceflight.42
